Alison Sydor (Rocky Mountain) is the new Canadian National Cyclo-cross Champion, adding the title to her resume of accomplishments. Sydor raced at the front of the elite womens’ race for most of the event, overcoming icy conditions and a continuous challenge from Pepper Harlton (Juventus Cycling Club).

In the men’s race, Geoff Kabush (Maxxis-Rocky Mountain) defended his title to become the Canadian National Cyclo-cross Champion for the second straight year. Goeff held off Derrick St. John (Garneau Club) and Aaron Schooler (Team H&R Block) to claim a decisive victory.

Both Sydor and Kabush are expected to line up at the UCI Jim Horner Grand Prix being held on the same course on Sunday, October 11th.

A message from the Prime Minister of Canada, The Rt. Hon. Stephen Harper, P.C.

It is with great pleasure that I extend my warmest greetings to everyone taking part in the 2008 Canadian National Cyclo-Cross Championships at
Edmonton’s Argyll Park, hosted by the Juventus Cycling Club and the Alberta Bicycle Association.

By combining aspects of mountain biking, cross-country cycling and road-racing, cyclo-cross enthusiasts have created a cycling discipline with its own character. In terms of technique, it is one of the most demanding forms of cycle racing. Someone unfamiliar with the sport might be forgiven for thinking they are witnessing the re-enactment of a Voyageur portage, as they watch competitors dismount in the face of obstacles and struggle up muddy slopes with bicycles on their shoulders.

This weekend event offers world-class cyclists from across Canada a chance to compete for the title of National Champion and UCI (worldwide ranking) points. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to compete at this level. I am certain that the athletes will make the most of this opportunity to raise the profile of the sport by competing to the best of their abilities.

On behalf of the Government of Canada, I wish you all an exciting and memorable championship.
